About Mona

Hi, I'm Mona, a native Mandarin speaker from Jiangnan, the historic heartland of Chinese ink painting, calligraphy and literary culture. I grew up surrounded by traditional arts and trained formally in Chinese brush painting and calligraphy from a young age, so I bring a deep understanding of Chinese culture to my teaching. Not just the language, but the history, aesthetics and thinking behind it.

I hold an MA (Distinction) in Design from Goldsmiths, University of London. During my undergraduate studies in China, I regularly tutored international students in Mandarin, helping them navigate everything from classroom Chinese to daily life: ordering food, reading signs, making friends, and building the confidence to actually use the language outside of textbooks. That experience taught me how to explain things clearly to non-native speakers and how to make lessons feel practical rather than abstract.

I offer Mandarin lessons for all levels, whether you're a complete beginner curious about the language, a GCSE or A-Level student preparing for exams, or a professional who needs conversational or business Mandarin. If you're interested in Chinese culture beyond the language (calligraphy, ink painting, classical poetry, opera or simply understanding how Chinese people think and communicate), I can weave that into our lessons too.

About the lesson

Every student is different, so I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. For beginners, I focus on building confidence with Pinyin, tones and everyday phrases before introducing characters gradually. For exam students, I work through past papers, key vocabulary lists and structured speaking practice. For adults learning for travel or business, I prioritise practical conversation and cultural context: the things textbooks don't teach you.

I use a mix of visual aids, real-life scenarios and spaced repetition to make vocabulary stick. My background in design means I'm naturally visual, so expect clear, well-organised lesson materials rather than walls of text.
