About Matthew
Bonjour !
I am a native French speaker living in Ireland, with previous experience living in Montréal, Canada. Having navigated life in both French and English-speaking environments, I have a deep, practical understanding of how languages are actually learned, as well as the unique challenges English speakers face when mastering French.
I pride myself on creating a professional, structured, and encouraging space where you feel comfortable building your skills. Whether we are practicing casual everyday conversation, diving into tricky grammar, or preparing for an exam, I bring patience, clarity, and genuine enthusiasm to every lesson.
I look forward to guiding you toward your goals!

Who My Lessons Are For
My classes are designed for adults and teenagers (ages 14+) at all learning levels, from absolute beginners taking their first steps to advanced speakers aiming for fluency. Whether you are learning for travel, career growth, personal interest, or preparing for an upcoming exam, we will tailor every session to your pace and goals.
My Methodology & Techniques
I believe language learning should be active, practical, and enjoyable. My approach centers on what you need most:
- Confidence-building casual conversation: If your main goal is to speak naturally, our classes can take the form of relaxed, low-pressure chats. We will discuss topics you actually enjoy (culture, current events, hobbies, or daily life) to help you build oral fluency, refine your pronunciation, and stop overthinking your grammar.
- Goal-oriented & flexible: Every student learns differently. We can focus on structured exercises, grammar breakdowns, or targeted exam prep depending on your objectives.
- Practical grammar in context: Instead of endless rulebooks, we tackle grammar naturally as it comes up in real examples and spoken practice so it actually sticks.
- A safe environment for mistakes: Living abroad in an English-speaking country taught me that making mistakes is a natural part of becoming fluent! I offer gentle, constructive feedback and clear notes after class so you can improve without feeling judged.
My Background & Experience
As a native French speaker living in Ireland, I bring both authentic, everyday language mastery and first-hand experience with the language-learning journey. My background in cross-cultural communication allows me to explain subtle nuances, idioms, and tricky pronunciation clearly to English speakers.
Lesson Structure & Timing
Standard lessons are 50 minutes long (with shorter 25-minute sessions available for trial lessons). A typical class includes a warm-up conversation, focused work on a specific topic or skill of your choice, and plenty of interactive speaking practice to reinforce what you’ve learned.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Matthew is a very friendly and warm person who loves sharing knowledge and connecting with others! He grew up in France and then lived in several French and/or English speaking countries, which gives his teaching a real, grounded quality rather than being purely theoretical. I fully recommend him
I’ve been getting French lessons from Matthew for a few months now and I’ve learned so much! I used to struggle to have conversations in French and be able to respond fast enough, but the lessons with him have really helped me speak in French. He’s so patient and friendly, which has also really helped me be more confident in speaking. I can’t recommend him enough. I’m delighted I started classes with him, and I’m always looking forward to the next one!
