English
Growing up bilingual (French-speaking mother, English-speaking father), I've always adored languages, and have also learnt Italian, German, Ancient Greek and Mandarin Chinese to various levels of fluency. Languages aren't just letters on the page; languages are the gateway to a particular culture, literature, and history.
What I offer:
French Language tutoring
French Literature tutoring
The way I work:
I am very happy to tailor our sessions to your particular requirements. If you need to ace your French GCSE Oral exam, that's what we'll focus on. If you want to build your confidence writing unseen poetry commentaries for your Comparative Literature undergraduate exam, no problem.
Our first session will be a discussion of your needs and requirements, and any areas of difficulty and challenge. Sending me a recent piece of work (essay, composition, commentary etc) ahead of time - minimum 48hrs - will help me better understand where you are, enabling our conversation to be more productive.
Typical Lesson length:
I work in both 1-hour and 2-hour sessions, depending on the type of class (see below) and on individual student requirements. If you are combining two or more types of class, for example French Language + French Literature, I recommend a 2-hour session.
For French Language Lessons:
I believe in language immersion as the most rapid and effective way to build foreign language skills, so from the very first lesson, I'll be encouraging you to speak in French as much as possible! But don't worry, we'll go at your speed, and you'll be amazed at the progress you make. As part of our sessions I sometimes like to do a little dictée (dictation exercise) as it simultaneously trains listening, writing and reading skills, as well as reinforcing grammar, vocabulary and spelling capabilities. For more advanced students, we might also work on compositions and both prose and verse translations in French to English and English to French.
For French Literature Lessons:
For this I recommend students have at least an intermediate level of French. I am very happy to work to syllabus (A-Level/Pre-U/University etc), or to devise a course of study with the student. We'll work on literary analysis, writing commentaries (in both French and English), and thematic essays, as well as improving contextual knowledge.
