About Alex
Bonjour! I'm a native French speaker who grew up in the UK, giving me a strong understanding of both the language itself and the way it is taught in British schools. I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE French and have experience tutoring younger students, helping them improve both their confidence and their results.
I love working with students and believe that the best learning happens when lessons feel relaxed, encouraging, and adapted to the individual. Every student has different strengths and different ways of learning, so I take the time to understand what works best for each person. My lessons are planned around the student's goals and include regular opportunities to practise, receive feedback, and build confidence at a steady pace.
I use a range of teaching strategies including retrieval practice, scaffolded learning, targeted questioning, and exam style tasks to develop the key skills assessed at GCSE. As a native speaker, I can also help students develop accurate pronunciation and a more natural understanding of the language, alongside the grammar and vocabulary needed for success in exams.
Alongside tutoring, I'm a professional musician, so I teach a hybrid of in-person and online. This has given me plenty of experience keeping lessons engaging and interactive in a virtual setting, while offering students the flexibility to learn from home.
My goal is to create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, challenging themselves, and making progress every week.

My teaching philosophy is centred on creating a supportive, student-centred learning environment where lessons are tailored to each individual's strengths, areas for development, and learning style. As a native French speaker who grew up in the UK with French parents, I bring both authentic language skills and a strong understanding of the GCSE curriculum. This allows me to bridge the gap between conversational French and the specific knowledge and exam techniques required for success.
I use a personalised approach to learning, beginning by identifying a student's current level and setting clear, achievable targets. Lessons are carefully structured to build confidence and independence, with regular retrieval practice and formative assessment to reinforce prior learning and monitor progress. I adapt my teaching methods to suit each learner, whether they benefit most from visual resources, structured grammar explanations, speaking practice, or exam style application.
Sessions typically combine the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Alongside developing core linguistic knowledge, I teach effective revision strategies, exam technique, and how to approach GCSE questions with confidence. As a native speaker, I also provide authentic pronunciation, natural vocabulary, and cultural insights that help students develop a deeper understanding of the language beyond the specification.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes long, providing enough time for explicit teaching, guided practice, independent application, and constructive feedback. I believe feedback should be specific and actionable, helping students understand not only what they need to improve but also how to improve it.
I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE French and, as a lifelong native speaker, continue to use French daily. Having experienced the GCSE course myself, I understand the demands of the current specification and the common misconceptions students encounter. My aim is not only to help students achieve their target grades but also to foster resilience, confidence, and a genuine enjoyment of learning French.
My lessons are designed for GCSE French students of all abilities, whether they are working towards a pass, aiming to secure a strong Grade 7–9, or simply looking to build confidence in the language.
