About Philip

Hey, I’m Philip, a native English speaker from Christchurch, New Zealand. Learning another language is hard, but rewarding.

I experienced this as I learned to speak Brazilian Portuguese (intermediate level currently) and how to read ancient Greek. I want to support others in their journey.

I love languages and have studied them a lot. I have completed bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in the arts. My Master’s degree included lots of grammar and translation from ancient Greek, while my Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago included researching linguistics (language theory) and semantics (word meaning).

I have privately taught students at both beginner and intermediate levels. If you are wanting conversational English, or English for general IELTS or Academic IELTS, I can help you achieve your goals!

About the lesson

In our lessons, we’ll focus on speaking, reading, listening, writing, and on pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, all tailored to your goals. During the first lesson, we’ll talk about your learning goals and identify areas to work on. Whether you’re a beginner or already conversational but wanting to improve your English or pass IELTS, I can help.

I believe learning English requires both lots of speaking practice, and systematic study of grammar and vocabulary, and so my classes include both. Each lesson will build on the previous one, so you can build your confidence and track your progress towards English fluency.
