About Angus

Having first been introduced to the acoustic guitar at the age of ten, I have been in the comforting hands of great teachers from the get-go.

It all began with 'the E song', in which early beginners are taught to master their basics such as string names and numbering, finger-picking basics like stability of hand position, fret naming and numbering, and initial introduction to notation names.

This swiftly progressed to more complex melodies, harmonies and chords.

Soon after this initial introduction, I had the great fortune to be introduced to a group of like-minded players in the area I grew up in. In my first band I learned to play the bass guitar, and gradually mastered that instrument over four years, playing in concerts in bands named Lo-Fi Culture Scene and Casablanca during my adolescence, from thirteen through to eighteen.

During my university years I continued to play the bass guitar, whilst studying, and rarely letting a guitar or instrument out of my sight for long.

Now at the age of thirty, I am returning to teaching in order to pass on these gifts that I have been given, and participate in the journey of other people learning the joys of music, whether for the first time or the five hundredth.

I look forward to meeting you and working together!

I have a warm and inclusive approach to music - this comes from my early experiences with music which were all exceedingly positive - I grew up mainly listening to 00s indie (think Bloc Party, The Killers, The Strokes, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines), and played in bands around that time, however as I have grown up my listening tastes expanded to include a broader range of styles, and historical periods of music.

Everybody's musical tastes are unique, and different music speaks to different people. As such, I work across interests, tastes and genres.

My lessons last a minimum of one hour and a maximum of two hours.

My approach to teaching is holistic and depends on the age and experience level of the student. A proper dialogue is always established with the student prior to engagement in order to work towards an agreement and a common understanding of what the student's developmental goals are, and what my suggestions are for that student's immediate and subsequent progress.

I am comfortable working across the age range, accepting a wide range of students.

Having first learnt to play the guitar as a ten-year-old, I have vivid memories of this period which I use to inform my practice with this age group. The intense burst of musical development that occurred in my teens informs my understanding of working with people of that age too, and the changes in my practice and understanding.

Naturally, everyone learns and experiences music in a totally distinctive and unique way, depending on their own road through life, and I work hard to ensure I understand and accommodate your unique goals, ambitions, desires, and dreams in our lessons together.
