About Daniel

I have been playing the drums since the age of 7 and am now in my 10th year of drumming. Even before this I would often spend many afternoons bashing away at pots and pans and would sit as close as I could to the drummer in my church to see what he was doing. As soon as I started taking lessons I knew it was for me.

Later when I entered high school I studied music as a subject and picked up piano and guitar. Over the last three years at high school, I have had the opportunity to perform as a soloist and in bands. In my first year of NCEA, I passed my performances, compositions and analyses with excellence and managed to achieve first in music across the year level.

I have also enjoyed playing drums and bass guitar for my youth group worship team as well as teaching the kids of a family friend how to play the drums.

I am excited to have moved to Dannevirke with my family and I look forward to passing on my knowledge to anyone who wishes to learn. I have been so privileged with my tutors over the years and their example has inspired me to share my love for music. Tutoring is the next step in my journey and I look forward to supporting you in yours.

About the lesson

I can teach anyone who is wishes to learn regardless of age, experience, talent or any other factor.

I like to teach by first understanding what students may already know and what they want to get out of learning the drums and working up from there. To me, the most important part of learning an instrument is finding enjoyment out of playing. For this reason every lesson will be catered towards the individual student rather than following a strict plan.

Along with helping to build good technique and habits I encourage students to bring anything they want to learn or need help with (songs, improvisation, composing, etc) to me.

I do expect students to practice material given to them outside of lesson time and to come back the following lesson having at least attempted to understand and play what I have taught. Not doing this will only slow down progress and make the instrument unenjoyable. I do understand that most students will not have access to a drum kit outside of lessons, however the great thing about learning drums is that any surface will do just fine to begin with. Pillows, a bed and couch arms are what I grew up playing. I also offer practice pads and sticks for student to take home for $5 each week.

Note - I recommend coming to my place to learn as I have a room with the sole purpose of playing and teaching drums. I can teach lessons online, and at the students home but this of course won’t be easy if the student does not own a drum kit.

Details

I offer lessons at $20 per half hour ($40/hour). It is up to you how frequently lessons will occur and how long they will last. Typically a student will have weekly lessons of either 30 minutes or 1 hour.

If a lesson needs to be cancelled, notification at least 24 hours prior is expected otherwise cancellation fee applies. If I cannot attend a lesson, the student/guardian will be informed at least 2 days prior to the lesson wherever possible and a catch-up lesson will be offered. The first lesson is free as it allows us to get to know each other and decide where to begin.
