About Alasdair

I am an Institute of Contemporary Music Performance BA graduate from London offering bass guitar lessons to beginner through to intermediate level musicians. I teach using a mixture of ear training and practical music theory, using your favourite songs to learn different musical concepts in a way that is fun and engaging. I will develop your ears and fretboard knowledge and help you achieve any goals that you have on the instrument.

I am passionate about music education and love to see the journey that students take with the bass guitar, watching their abilities and appreciation of the instrument grow over time is the most rewarding aspect of the job for me.

I have been playing in bands for 10+ years and am particularly fond of playing Funk and Progressive Rock, I enjoy practicing Jazz as I believe this is excellent to widen fretboard knowledge and musical vocabulary as a whole.

I have recorded original songs with different bands and have been gigging around London since I was 19. Music is my number one passion and I play as much as I can, playing in various bands and attending jam nights regularly.

About the lesson

I teach all genres and have taught students of all ages and backgrounds. I have been playing for over 15 years, gigging for 10+ years and teaching for over 2 years, helping students with a wide range of musical goals.

In terms of teaching I believe that learning concepts such as scales and chords are important, however for them to be the most effective I pair these with practical examples from established songs and music of students' choosing to demonstrate why they are useful. I use this approach combined with ear training (such as transcribing melodies/bass lines/chord progressions) in order to ensure that lessons have content that will benefit students when they are playing with other musicians as well as when they are practicing alone. Don't worry if this seems like a lot, you'll understand it in no time!

My rates are $45/hour or $25/half hour, the first lesson is half price. Please let me know if you have any questions, I look forward to hearing from you!
