About Sebastian
Sebastian Barrera studied Business Marketing and Public Relations with an emphasis on Project Development at DUOC UC, where he developed a strong foundation in communications, community engagement, and strategic project development. After immigrating to Edmonton, Sebastian dedicated his career to community development, youth empowerment, and innovative social service leadership. Sebastian began his professional journey in Edmonton with Action for Healthy Communities, where he worked as a Community Animator before advancing into the role of Community Initiatives Coordinator. During his time there, he helped develop grassroots programs and community-based initiatives focused on inclusion, newcomer engagement, and social connection. Following his work at Action for Healthy Communities, Sebastian joined Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers as part of the “In Road” addiction counselling partnership with Alberta Health Services. In this role, he supported individuals facing addiction and complex social barriers, contributing to collaborative approaches that connected recovery, health, and community support systems. Sebastian later joined Boyle Street Community Services, where he served for five years as Programs Coordinator for the Youth Unit. His work focused on supporting youth experiencing poverty, homelessness, justice involvement, and social exclusion. Through relationship-centered leadership and innovative programming, he helped create safer and more empowering opportunities for young people navigating significant life barriers. Currently, Sebastian serves as Employment Programs Manager at YOUCAN Youth Services. He first joined the organization as part of the Relentless team, working on the Y50 pilot project in collaboration with the police department to support high-risk youth. After three years on the project, he was promoted into his current leadership role, where he develops innovative employment strategies, workforce partnerships, and community-based approaches that help youth transition away from violence, poverty, and instability toward long-term economic independence and leadership development. Beyond his professional career, Sebastian has remained deeply involved in grassroots community development throughout Edmonton. He served for 13 years with the Parkdale Cromdale Community League and continues to support arts-based community engagement through Free Arts Edmonton Society, a free arts initiative dedicated to making creative opportunities accessible to children and youth. Throughout his career, Sebastian has been recognized with numerous leadership and community service awards from the Province of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, and Alberta Health Services. His recognitions include the RISE Award from the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (2016), the Champion Award from Central McDougall and REACH Edmonton (2018), the Alberta Health Services Citizenship Award for Overdose Intervention (2022), and the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to community leadership and social impact. Sebastian is widely recognized for his grassroots approach to leadership, collaborative community-building style, and unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for youth, newcomers, and marginalized communities across Alberta.
