About Lavinia

My name is Lavinia Raymund Jayadev and I have recently completed my Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my degree, I used to tutor students and I did the same during my A-Levels.

I remember how much I used to struggle to understand maths when I was younger and how once I got a tutor I learned so many different methods that were not taught during school. It made understanding maths not only easier but enjoyable. It helped me develop my own methods for understanding difficult topics which I used to share with others.
Once I started tutoring during my A-Levels I enjoyed seeing a student's confidence grow once they understood something they never thought they would. Not understanding a subject in school, especially maths, can really affect a student's confidence in their own abilities. I believe maths is a subject which everyone can eventually understand in their own way. There does not need to be a singular way to approach math problems even though some schools only teach one way.

As a tutor, I aim to help students grow confident in their math abilities so that they can achieve the grades they want.

About the lesson

Topics will be broken down into bite-sized chunks to help students retain information easily. My teaching technique uses unique analogies which can be relatable to the student to allow for a better understanding.
I aim to help students understand how to apply different methods which suit their preferences rather than focusing on memorising content they struggle to understand. Sometimes students need to take an alternative approach to standard methods taught during school as not all students will learn in the same manner.
I also focus on helping the student grow confident in the topics they are studying. When a student becomes comfortable and begins to understand a topic it helps motivate them to want to learn more.

Throughout my A-Levels, I tutored young students in mathematics who were struggling to understand basic principles. Within mathematics basic principles need to be understood in order to make advanced topics easier. I begin by understanding what topics the students struggle with and why. I then provide some questions which will allow me to understand what methods they currently use when approaching problems. Once I have an understanding of what their current skillset is, I develop a tailored plan to focus on filling in the knowledge gaps helping students eventually approach exam questions easier.
I also tutored students throughout my degree in topics tailored specifically to Mechanical Engineering.

Lessons are typically 1 hour but can be extended if requested. I will be able to tutor students in mathematics for the following levels:
- Key Stage 2
- Key Stage 3
- GCSE Foundation
- GCSE Higher
