About Avery

Hi there! My name is Avery, and I just graduated from McGill University with a degree in Computer Science, and will be starting my master's degree in the fall. Throughout university I ran the Computer Science Helpdesk, where I trained and oversaw over 30 tutors and also held a position as a tutor myself. I assisted over 300 undergraduate students in around 15 computer science courses providing code review, concept explanations, debugging help, and exam prep, all leading to enhanced student understanding and performance. In addition to my role at the helpdesk, I have been a TA multiple times for both intro to programming courses and more advanced topics. Here, I held weekly office hours, monitored discussion boards, and graded assignments and exams. Throughout my three years of tutoring experience I have gained a thorough understanding of what students are looking for in a tutor, and truly believe that I can help students improve their knowledge of computer science and fall in love with coding! I am open to helping all age groups from elementary to university, and I really hope I can become a source of encouragement and aid for anyone who needs help from me. About the lesson

In a tutoring session I will guide you through the material you need help with by first asking questions to gauge your level of understanding, and so I can see the best next steps to take from your individual starting point. I utilize techniques such as breaking down complicated concepts into smaller components, providing visual aids/diagrams, and relating the material to previously learned concepts to increase comprehension and confidence in the subject.
