About James
My name is James, and I am a Mathematics undergraduate at the University of Birmingham, where I am on track for a First-Class Honours degree.
At A-Level, I achieved an A* in Mathematics, alongside an A in Physics and Computer Science. I have also tutored GCSE Mathematics and Physics, having been selected from over 140 students to deliver tutoring sessions at my school, where every student I worked with achieved Grade 7 or higher in those subjects.
My teaching philosophy is centred on building a deep conceptual understanding of material while simultaneously equipping students with effective exam technique. By teaching students how to think through questions in a structured way and communicate their solutions clearly and logically, I help them confidently approach challenging and unfamiliar questions.

In our first session, I talk with the student to understand their current level and identify the specific topics they find challenging. This may involve a short, low-pressure assessment to get an accurate baseline. From there, we set clear, realistic goals together, which helps the student take ownership of their learning.
Subsequent lessons follow a reliable but adaptable structure:
1. Review: A brief recap of the previous week's material to reinforce understanding.
2. Main Session: Depending on their syllabus, we cover new content, review past material, or tackle exam questions.
3. Debrief: We summarise what we have covered, discuss the plan for next time, and I set relevant homework.
Progress is measured by tracking which topics are improving and which still need work, adjusting my lesson plans to reflect this. Parents and students are always welcome to ask for progress updates.
