About Christian
I am from the south side of Chicago and graduated from Morgan Park High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program. I obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from Morehouse College where I tutored many of my classmates, choir brothers, and local college students in the Atlanta area. From here, I went on to complete my doctoral studies at Iowa State University, graduating in 2024.
While I love mathematics deeply, I understand that the general environment where mathematics is practiced can be uninviting. As a result, I’ve dedicated my mathematics journey to demonstrating that anybody who does math is a mathematician. By showing up authentically and connecting with individuals, I strive to show that math can be fun, social and worth all the thinking because the answer to “when will I ever use this in the real world?” is “EVERYWHERE.”

I focus on meeting students where they are and going from there.
I start with two preliminary assessments: one completed alone and one together with my supervision. The initial assessment allows me to gauge the student’s standalone knowledge — as most exams are completed this way. The second assessment allows the student to verbally talk through the problem — many students doubt their mathematical abilities when alone with no one to bounce ideas off. From these assessments, we (the student and I) can tackle specific problem areas. For example, if a student in Calculus struggles with integration, then there may be some issues in their algebra that can be ascertained from the assessment; this tells us to focus on and strengthen their algebra background.
The brain is a muscle; and, like most muscles, it must be trained for strength. That means (1) completing multiple problem sets which allows students to see patterns in the specific math subject, (2) correcting incorrect math solutions — the ability to figure out where a solution went wrong is valuable for checking your work and (3) incorporating reading [word problems] because mathematics is a language and word problems are simply a translation into prose.
