I currently tutor on an online Tutoring site which I have been doing for a couple of months, building up a 5* rating. Previously, I have tutored before in my Sixth Form, and found that by building on these ideas, students found exams a lot less stressful, and the transitions from GCSE to AS/A Level to further studies became much more fluid and meant that they had somewhere to start from. I personally found this the case, and when faced a new question I hadn’t seen, was able to apply previous knowledge to at least endeavour the first few steps!

About the lesson

I am offering online Tuition in A-Level and GCSE Mathematics. I want to try and help students to really understand the basic concepts that are involved in Maths which are often skimmed over at school, progressing and building on them together. I feel this is important as it enables them to use this knowledge when facing harder questions/topics they haven’t seen before, having the confidence in their ability to attempt them. Maths is deemed similar to marmite, you either love it or hate it, understand it or don’t. I want to try and help get students enthusiastic in maths, or at least improve their grasp on the theories used – which are the underlying building blocks used throughout. This will hopefully make them see it as less of a daunting subject.

Each person has their own level of understanding, which I shall assess through questions of varying difficulty. This will allow me to see how they approach and solve problems. From here I will decide the best way to structure the sessions. Often mathematical terminology flies over people’s head, so I use diagrams wherever possible to try and help studnets visualise and understand what is being solved.

Little/No understanding of topic: Start with the basics! Run through the main formulas and ideas linked with the topic, weaving in some worked through examples. Once they grasp all this, I will start setting questions or go through ones they have brought to the session, with time to discuss how the problems were tackled, and any concerns they have.

Moderate understanding: If the rudimentary concepts are understood, then I will work through practice questions so that answering these problems will become second nature. Once these have been mastered, we can move onto more challenging questions intended to trick students out.

One off questions: Bring the question to the session and I will be happy to work it through with you!

If you just send me through the questions/topics you want to go though before the lesson, this will allow me to plan the session so that we make the most of the time available! Progress shall be monitored through example questions/tests set under exam conditions (to help prepare for tests).
