About David
Hi, I am David Chang, a math tutor and former teacher. I tutored periodically in my early career before I had settled on education as my career, and finally committed to teaching at Fusion Academy Palo Alto in 2016. I loved working there with incredible staff and students and teaching math 1-on-1. I loved the flexibility we were allowed in the curriculum and the way we were able to adapt the situation to each student so they could feel most comfortable and able to work at math, regardless of how they felt about math beforehand.
After having worked at Fusion Academy for 3 academic years, I decided to work independently as a tutor so that the entire process would be as direct as possible; both the families and I could schedule and communication without any bureaucracy or delay. I have tutored independently in the years since, and have loved it the entire time.
Now, for any situation where I feel like the student(s) will benefit from videos, activities, or any resources besides me, I will gladly refer them, whether it's to a Youtube channel, Khan Academy practice problems, or online sites with games or quizzes.

I work with students to address whatever needs they have: the needs are not mine, so I don't force my students into specific ways of working. On the other hand, depending on a combination of what the student wants and needs, we will go over specific problems and formulas, make test guides, go over and simplify the process for addressing tough situations, and try different things. Different people work better with different kinds of information, whether that's through audio, visuals, activities, or parallel concepts/problems.
Most of my students meet with me once or twice a week, typically for sessions ranging from 0.5 hour to 1.5 hours although some of my more independent students will only ask for help every few weeks or months. I am willing to work with whatever schedule is convenient for the both of us and can help most students ranging from middle school to early college.
The key, I think, to my sessions, is that I don't treat my students as lesser-than; we both share the same interest in seeing you succeed, so I see it as a project for us to complete together.
