About Alexander
I am a professional economist and have a double Masters degree in Economics from the University of Nottingham, UK (distinction) and the University of Konstanz, Germany where I specialised in public economics, applied economics and econometrics. Previously, I graduated with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering (2:1) from the University of Edinburgh, UK.
I tutor part-time to share my knowledge and passion for Economics with secondary school pupils, university students and adult learners. I also offer tuition in Maths for secondary students.
I have worked with academic researchers, developed economic policy and worked with start-ups so I can give you a great insight in how the economics you learn in the classroom links to the wider world.
Whatever your goals, whether it is acing exams or improving your understanding of the economy, I can help you. Education is about so much more than just exams and I believe a holistic approach to learning is much more valuable and can enrich the rest of a student's life. I use a motivation first approach where student's are encouraged to follow their curiosity and given the tools to develop their skills and find answers on their own.
Encouraging intrinsic motivation and teaching fundamental skills sets up students for independent success. Here one-on-one tutoring excels by fostering a strong student-tutor relationship that encourages rather than coerces.
Besides tutoring, I have teaching experience in organising and leading university study groups, giving learning seminars in my professional capacity and as a professional sports coach.
I have lived up and down the UK and abroad but currently live in a beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands where I cycle, swim and hike. If I'm not outside, I'm learning German, playing my guitar, or reading a book on the topic that has caught my eye that week.

My approach to teaching is a personalised one around a strong student-teacher relationship. I aim to understand what motivates the student and tailor sessions to be interesting and enjoyable.
I have a holistic approach that focuses on breaking down concepts to an understandable level and teaching techniques that empower students to continue their learning independently.
A typical lesson might look at a real world economic issue in the news, identify the economic problem that we want to think about, building a model or a diagram to understand the key processes at play, working through some sample questions and problems, and then returning back to the real world and seeing how what we have learnt has improved our understanding.
I am happy to tailor lessons to individual student's goals and needs. Examples of what we can cover in sessions include going through topics, essay writing, and past paper questions.
Topics I am happy to cover:
- Microeconomics
- Macroeconomics
- Econometrics
- Applied Economics
- Public Economics
- Development Economics
- Labour Economics
- Inequality
- International Economics
- Economics of Education
- Political Economy
- Auctions
- Data Analysis
- Game Theory
- Statistics
- Causal Identification
- Probability
- Calculus
If you are interested in a topic that isn't on the list but you are still interested, please reach out and I'd be happy to discuss it with you!

Alexander is an excellent tutor with a realist approach to economics. His communication style makes learning complicated economic concepts easily comprehensible, whilst brilliantly highlighting how intertwined economics is with our day-to-day life.
More than anything, he is a compassionate individual, with an appreciation for the human behind the student. Truly a great tutor.View more recommendations
