About Jessica
I have a master's degree in Classical Studies from Duke University. There, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for multiple classes, and have therefore been trained in university-level teaching of language and culture courses in this field. Along with this, I have learned graduate-level reading, writing, and editing. My degree also focused on archaeology, allowing me to provide expert academic background in classical cultures and literature. My undergraduate degree in Classics and Art History is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from which I graduated Magna Cum Laude, with departmental distinction, and college honors. I'm a first-gen Latina in a field with few others like me. I hope to inspire and help others into and beyond my position, so we can all succeed further.

I'm a firm believer in repetition as a way that the brain not only receives new information, but also keeps it. I don't teach memorization that will simply get you past the next exam. I use repetition, specifically in writing and literacy, to ensure that whatever it is you need to learn sticks with you. For example, if you're trying to understand the specific connotation of a reading, we might read through it a few times focusing on different aspects. Then, write out your understanding of it together in order to put that all together to reach your comprehensive goals. Or if you are focusing on vocabulary, I come up with repetitive writing exercises that will have you understanding and remembering the words, their definitions, and even grammatical features. I teach all levels of English, reading, and writing. For classical languages and cultures, I can teach beginner and intermediate Latin, and beginner level ancient Greek. Various levels of classical culture as well, largely focusing on archaeology material culture!
