About Harper
I came to guitar relatively late myself, picking it up properly only after finishing my formal music education. That personal experience of starting later than most gives me real patience for adult learners walking into their first lesson feeling unsure. Watching my own progress unfold slowly taught me that age has very little to do with genuine musical growth. That belief now sits at the center of how I teach.
I make a conscious effort to slow down whenever a student needs more time, rather than sticking rigidly to a lesson plan. Music, to me, should never feel like a race against anyone else's pace. What I enjoy most is seeing a retiree proudly play a classical piece they once thought impossible. That kind of quiet joy is far more rewarding than any technical milestone.
I continue studying classical and indie guitar myself, often exploring new pieces during my own personal practice time. Staying a student myself keeps my teaching fresh and genuinely empathetic toward beginners. Lessons often shape themselves around pieces or styles a student feels drawn to, whether classical or more contemporary indie sounds. My hope is always that students find real, lasting comfort in playing music on their own terms.

Older beginners often worry their fingers won't cooperate the way a younger player's might, so I address that concern in the very first class. We start slow, focusing on relaxed hand position before touching a single string with intention. Classical fingerstyle basics come early, since the plucking motion builds control without demanding much strength. Indie style open tunings are introduced a little later, offering a fresh, less rigid sound to explore.
Once the hands settle into a rhythm, I shift attention toward reading simple tablature alongside basic music notation. This dual approach helps students understand what they're playing, not just memorise finger positions. Gentle fingerpicking patterns replace flashy strumming here, matching the calmer, more textured sound many adult learners tend to prefer. I also leave space for questions constantly, since adult learners often think more analytically than younger students.
Progress at this stage looks different for every learner, and I remind students of that regularly. There is no fixed timeline, only steady, personal improvement built through short, regular practice. Familiar melodies are woven into lessons often, keeping the process enjoyable rather than purely technical. My aim throughout stays the same, helping students feel genuinely at home with their guitar.
