About Luorui

Hello! I'm Luorui, originally from Chengdu, China, famously known as the "Country of Heaven." Four years ago, I set off on a journey to the UK to pursue my Master's degree in English Literature at the University of York.

With over 20 years of language learning experience, I understand the challenges and joys of mastering a new language. I believe in fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring and expressing themselves.

As a Mandarin tutor with a diverse background in language and art, I bring a wealth of experience to my teaching. From peer-to-peer instruction to interpreting at art galleries in China, I'm excited to share my expertise with you.

My passion for language and art has taken me around the globe, allowing me to collaborate with esteemed artists like Sebastião Salgado, Bruno Barbey, and Alain Fleischer. Through these experiences, I've gained a profound appreciation for the fusion of language and culture.

As your tutor, I am dedicated to crafting a personalised learning journey tailored to your individual needs and learning style. Whether you're just starting out or seeking to refine your skills, I am here to support and guide you every step of the way.

About the lesson

Language is culture. After living and working across different countries, I've discovered that mastering a language means understanding the world it comes from. Learning Mandarin isn't just about memorising characters—it's about connecting with centuries of Chinese thought, tradition, and expression.

I design each lesson around you! Everyone learns differently, and what excites one student might bore another. My approach draws from cognitive science and linguistics to create lessons that work with how your brain naturally processes language.

What I Offer

Beginner Mandarin
We start with the essentials: practical phrases for daily life, core grammar patterns, and the vocabulary you'll actually use. No overwhelming lists of characters—just the building blocks that let you have real conversations from day one.

A-Level Chinese
Exam success requires more than vocabulary—it demands analytical depth. I'll help you master the specific skills examiners look for: crafting sophisticated essays, analysing literary texts with cultural insight, and delivering confident oral presentations. We'll tackle past papers strategically, strengthen your weak points, and develop the critical thinking that distinguishes top-band responses. Whether you're aiming to maintain your grade or push for that A*, I adapt our focus to your exam board's requirements and your individual goals.

Travel Chinese
Master the phrases that matter when you're exploring China. Book hotels, order authentic dishes, chat with locals, and navigate cities with confidence. These aren't textbook scenarios—they're the real situations you'll encounter.

Chinese Culture Through Language
Language and culture dance together. Explore what fascinates you: the philosophy behind Chinese tea ceremonies, the wordplay in classical poetry, the social codes in modern films, or the regional stories hidden in local cuisines.

Business Chinese
Decode the unspoken rules of Chinese professional culture. It’s designed for everyone—from beginners to pros—so you’ll build a strong foundation to communicate clearly and confidently in any work situation. It’ll help you handle real business scenarios without stress.

My Method
I use scaffolded learning—think of it as building a linguistic ladder. Each new concept connects to what you already know, creating a stable foundation for the next step. When you're ready, I remove the support structures, leaving you confident and independent.
Speaking comes first. I encourage you to use Mandarin from our very first session. Mistakes aren't failures—they're data points that help us adjust your learning path.

Most importantly, I put you at ease. Learning a language makes us vulnerable, like being a child again. I listen with empathy, celebrate your progress, and create a space where curiosity thrives over perfection.
