About Elizabeth

Hi! I’m Liz, a learner-centered tutor who focuses on meeting students exactly where they are and building skills step by step. I specialize in phonics and literacy for grades K–6, and I also tutor math through the Algebra level. My sessions are structured, supportive, and confidence-building, with plenty of guided practice and clear strategies students can use independently. I also offer tutoring for high school psychology, supported by my Master’s-level training in clinical mental health.

-My approach as a tutor and how I share my knowledge

*Teaching method and techniques*

I am a learner-centered tutor, which means I start with where the learner is and build from there. I focus on creating a supportive, structured environment where students feel safe making mistakes and practicing new skills. I use clear modeling (“I do”), guided practice (“we do”), and independent practice (“you do”) so students can actually USE what they learn instead of just hearing it once.

For reading, I especially love teaching phonics and literacy skills. I break concepts down into small, manageable steps, use repetition in a way that feels encouraging (not boring), and choose activities that help students gain confidence quickly. For math, I focus on understanding "why" something works, not just memorizing steps, and I use plenty of examples before moving into independent work.

* A typical lesson plan*

A typical session is structured but flexible depending on the student’s needs that day:

1. Quick check-in (2–5 minutes): What felt hard since last time? What felt easier?

2. Warm-up/review (5–10 minutes): Practice a skill we’ve already covered to build fluency and confidence.

3. New skill or targeted instruction (15–25 minutes):I explicitly teach one key concept at a time using modeling and examples.

4. Guided practice (10–15 minutes): We work through problems or reading tasks together while I coach and correct gently in real time.

5. Independent practice (5–10 minutes): The learner tries it on their own so we can see what is sticking.

6. Wrap-up + plan (2–5 minutes): We review progress, name one win, and identify one goal for next time.

What sets me apart as a tutor

What sets me apart is that I do not “teach at” students—I build with them. I pay close attention to how the student learns, what their current skills actually are, and what might be getting in the way (confidence, attention, gaps in foundational skills, or anxiety around schoolwork). I also bring a strong background in learning and behavior through my training in clinical mental health, which helps me stay patient, supportive, and effective when students feel stuck or discouraged.

My tutoring is best suited for:

-Literacy / Reading (Grades K–6): phonics, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and foundational reading skills

-Math (Grades K–9, up to Algebra level): foundational math through pre-algebra/algebra concepts

-High school Psychology: support with coursework, studying, vocabulary, and understanding major concepts (I am a Master’s-level clinical mental health student, so this is an area I feel especially confident teaching)
