  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been tutoring about 20 years to students on a 1 to 1 and group basis. When I was working within the pharmaceutical industry as an industrial chemist I developed an interest with helping others with their forthcoming exams. I initially started with a London based agency.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

I teach biology, chemistry and physics to GCSE or iGCSE level as well as biology and chemistry to A level. The topics that I like teaching the most include osmosis, electrolysis, moles, electromagnets. All of these are commonly asked for by students, so I have developed unique ways of delivering and breaking them down to make them simple to understand. Also, I have more than one teaching method, so if the first method doesn’t work, I can use a different method.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had a range of science teachers, some great and some not so great.

One of my teachers didn’t turn up to lessons, another used to turn up, but continuously write on a white board in block capitals without any form of explanation. Neither, did I find effective for learning.

I have had other teachers that were energetic, lively, engaging with interesting motivating stories that backed the relevant subject material that needs to be taught. This is exactly the style of teaching that I use.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor

There is no single quality that makes a good tutor. A good tutor has a number of good qualities:

    Professionalism:
Turning up to lessons at the correct time and date, giving the parents feedback.
Following all legislative requirements including use of a contract and using general data protection regulations

    Enhanced CRB check:
All tutors should have and enhanced CRB check updated at least every 2 years. A CRB check only provides information about the past, not the current. This is why it needs to be updated.

    Curriculum
The KS3 curriculum and A level curriculum is updated about every 8 years, whilst the GCSE is updated every 5 years. It is important that all tutors update their knowledge to stay current. Also, there are differences between the courses, so it is important that curriculum is delivered exam board specific, rather than just teaching general science tuition.
    Exam technique
Teaching content only is doing half the job. This will give a small improvement of grade. However, the big problem, often at A level is that the exam board exam technique needs to be taught. I spend a lot of time with all my students teaching exam technique. It makes a big difference to the grade.

    Differentiation
I have had dyslexic students before or others with special education needs. As a qualified teacher I am aware of how to differentiate my lessons to account of individuals needs. A current example is that I have foreign students who do not have English as a first language. For these students I use more picture based lessons.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

About 4 years ago a client contacted for GCSE science lessons. On the school’s website it listed Edexcel GCSE science as the subject. When the parent sent me a topic list it included material that was not on Edexcel GCSE science course. It turned out that the student was not studying Edexcel GCSE. He was studying Edexcel iGCSE course which has different topics. The parent then phoned the school and they confirmed it to be iGCSE, which is different to GCSE.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

The main difficulty I have is the wide variety of reasons that people come to me for. Some people have lessons to improve their grade, others to push them to very top. Some people find the classroom environment doesn’t work for them, either too many students in a class or the room environment is not conductive to learning.
  • Do you have a particular passion?

Yes, the rewarding results day. I get lots of texts and phone calls on results day with lots of good news. This day is definitely the most enjoyable stage of the academic year.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

Taking account of individuals needs, extensive specialised knowledge within a wide range subject. Ability to deliver high quality results on a regular basis.
