About Marcus
I was a musician from an early age, initially being taught and encouraged by my Father who played in popular Cornish bands in the 1960’s and it’s thanks to him and many other inspiring teachers that I became a professional bass player. I studied music at Middlesex University and the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and have lived and worked as a musician in the capital ever since. I have performed extensively in the London jazz scene and has played at prestigious venues such as the Vortex, Jazz Cafe and Pizza Express, Soho as well as festivals like Glastonbury, Shetland Folk Festival and Fengaros in Cyprus. Performances have also taken me to France, Germany, Portugal and many other locations. I have remained a versatile and open minded musician and have worked with artists from the world of folk and blues such as Ben Faulkner’s Bonfire Band and Adam Beattie and singer-songwriters such as Baxter Dury, son of the legendary Ian Dury as well as some of the Uk’s most innovative jazz artists. I have played on over a dozen commercially available albums as well as sessions for library and film and tv music.
I have been teaching double bass and bass guitar for around twenty years. I have taught young people in schools in South London and as a private tutor from home and more recently on line via Zoom and Skype. Former students have gone on to become full time musicians themselves and have obtained scholorships to prestigious music schools such as The Purcell School in North London and The Royal Academy of Music.

I really enjoy teaching and passing on the skills which I have developed over many years as a full time professional musician.
I was lucky enough to have many inspiring teachers when I was starting out who nurtured my early talent and designed their approach to the lessons based on my individual needs. This is my aim too and I will always adapt my teaching technique to the students requirements rather than teaching to a set formula.
I design my own teaching recources and will share these with my students.

Marcus penrose is a very fine Bassist playing at the highest level. He has a wonderful deep sound and modern swing feel, and his playing is genuinely creative and chliche free.
Marcus also writes extremely well with an advanced understanding of harmony and an ear for a beautiful melody.
On top of all that he is a very nice and friendly bloke.
I have learnt from him for many years and I would recommend him to anyone wanting to deepen their knowledge of bass playing or harmony in any context. There is huge knowledge there - go and get it !
Marcus has been helping me move from bass guitar to double bass. He makes everything really easy to understand. I reccomend him. Fran
My lessons with Marcus have started brilliantly. I'm a beginner to the double bass but I am a professional drummer. My lessons over Zoom have been really well organised and efficient and Marcus takes care to make sure I am getting the help I need. He also sends me some really useful personalised notes and charts to help me practice. He's great! Highly recommended.
KeithMarcus was my bass teacher for around five years. He started teaching me bass guitar as a complete beginner at the tender age of 7 and I found his teaching utterly inspirational. He seemed to really care and was completely committed to seeing me progress. He also started to teach me the double bass and helped me obtain a scholarship to Purcell School of Music.. I'm now 27 years old and play professionally. I really recommend him as a teacher.
