About Libby

I am currently studying Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Sydney and graduated a Bachelor of Science with first class honors from the University of Melbourne. I am an Australian-born Chinese tutor who grew up in a Chinese-speaking environment but had to actively learn Mandarin beyond conversational understanding. Because of this, I understand the challenges many Australian-born Chinese students face — being able to understand or speak some Chinese, but lacking confidence in reading, writing, or expressing themselves clearly. As a child, I often questioned “Why learn Chinese?”, something I'm sure many ABCs can relate to. Over time, I grew a genuine interest in the language and culture. I studied Chinese consistently throughout my schooling, continuing through to high school, where I achieved first place twice in Victorian Chinese speaking competitions and ranked first within my cohort in VCE Chinese. These experiences shaped my belief that language learning can be both meaningful and enjoyable, and I would love to be part of your learning journey.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is supportive, patient, and relatable. I focus on helping students build a strong foundation in Mandarin while developing confidence and genuine interest in the language. I emphasize understanding, practical usage, and gradual improvement, drawing on the strategies that helped me succeed in my own language learning journey. Lessons are adapted to each student’s level and learning pace, with a focus on making Chinese feel less intimidating and more enjoyable. I will target speaking pronunciation, reading, writing and listening, and tailoring the lessons according to each student's strengths and weaknesses. I aim to create a comfortable learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and develop a lasting passion for learning Mandarin.
