About Martha
I am an experienced academic and tutor offering high-quality, personalised support to school and university students. Alongside over 10 years of teaching experience, my academic work gives me first-hand insight into university expectations, assessment criteria, and academic standards. I take a clear, supportive, and professional approach to every session.
My teaching experience spans multiple countries and educational contexts. I began the tutoring aspect of my career teaching languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese), before focusing more closely on academic writing, research methods, and university skills. I currently focus my tutoring offer in these areas, as they closely complement my current research role at LSE.
I have supported students across a range of needs, including essay and exam preparation, proofreading essays and dissertations, and university entrance preparation. For example, I supported a second-year student at the University of Sheffield with Spanish essays and exam preparation, contributing to a final module mark of 69 after a mock result of 52. I have also taught languages in schools across the Italian Alps and worked extensively with students preparing for university applications and entrance exams.
My students consistently describe my tutoring style as engaging, friendly, and highly personalised. I believe we learn best in supportive environments where we feel confident to ask questions and make mistakes. I take time to understand each student’s goals, strengths, and learning style before developing a tailored approach to support their progress.

Since 2011, I have supported students at GCSE, A-level, and university level as a tutor and teacher, helping them build confidence, academic skills, and clear routes towards their goals.
I hold a First-Class undergraduate degree in modern languages from Newcastle University. I taught English in Italy and Brazil, as well as tutoring students in Spain while completing my Master’s degree in Gender Studies at the Universities of Granada and York. This was awarded a Double Distinction in 2020 (including 90% for my dissertation).
Since 2023, I have worked as a Research Fellow at LSE, specialising in health and social care evaluations. This academic role complements my tutoring experience, allowing me to support students with first-hand insight into how universities assess, mark, and review academic work and applications.
I offer bespoke support in the following areas:
1. Support for social science students with essay and dissertation writing. This includes planning and structuring work, developing strong arguments, writing clearly for academic audiences, and (where relevant) preparing work for publication.
2. Teaching in qualitative research methods. This involves supporting students to understand and apply approaches such as interviews, ethnography, mixed-methods research, evaluations etc., as well as preparing for exams and assessed coursework in these areas.
3. Proofreading for essays, dissertations, and applications, etc. This involves offering clear, constructive feedback and suggested edits that empower students to improve their work independently.
4. I also enjoy helping students prepare for university. This includes support with English tests, entrance exams, personal statements, and interview preparation, as well as building confidence in academic reading, writing, and study skills.
I am passionate about supporting students to achieve their learning goals, and I ensure lessons are personalised, welcoming, and engaging. Sessions typically last one hour, and are available online or in-person in London.
