Before beginning, I review the course curriculum and use it as a guide for lessons. Together with the student, we go through their recent class material to identify what they understand and where they need clarification, focusing on key concepts. I often ask students to explain the content back to me in their own words, and we start each lesson with a set of rapid-fire questions to reinforce learning. Depending on the student’s needs, we may also work on legal writing or reading skills, practising together via shared screen. I encourage active learning by prompting the student to do most of the work, assigning essays, and suggesting they attend professors’ office hours so we can review their feedback together. Lessons typically last 50 minutes, or 90 minutes with a 5-minute break. I only work with A-Level and first- or second-year university students, as this is when the relevant qualifying law or politics modules are taught.
