About James
Hello! My name is James and I'm a 22-year old graduate in English Literature. I studied at the University of East Anglia, whose literary alumni include Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro and Booker Prize winner Ian McEwan.
Over the course of my degree I studied a varied range of writers from different eras, disciplines and nationalities; I was particularly interested in lyric poetry, Modernism and European existentialist philosophy, writing my dissertation on a subject that combined all three fields. As well as studying more contemporary writers, I read modules on 18th-century poetry and prose, Romanticism, Shakespeare and Chaucer.
In my first year at university, half my modules were in the school of philosophy. I studied ancient philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, more contemporary western philosophers such as Hume, Kant and Nietzsche; and also the more maths-based Propositional Logic.
In the year since my graduation I have taken on four students at degree level, helping them elucidate their ideas for essay writing, guiding them with their grammar and giving them tips for concise exam revision techniques. Alongside these tutoring roles, I have also been teaching guitar to a number of students over the past year, as I am an avid musician!
These teaching roles have honed my pedagogical abilities, but most importantly - I believe - have given me the sensitivity and intuition required for effective tutoring. Creating a dynamic of trust, friendship and fun - as well as academic aptitude - has been the most important part of any student-teacher relationship I have had in my life, and as such I look to instil these principles in every tutoring role I take on.

I am a graduate of English Literature and Philosophy, and so these are the subjects that I am mainly looking to offer tutelage in. I'd say that my main skills are proof-reading, editing, grammar, clarification of ideas, essay-writing technique and textual analysis. For me, these skills constitute the foundations of any lucid, comprehensible and effective essay or exam answer.
I look to teach these skills in a dynamic fashion, whereby I like to read an example of my student's writing and teach according to the observations I make therein. Depending on the level of my student, I may set them a writing exercise to ascertain the key areas for improvement, or I might simply read through a piece of work they are writing at the time to help guide them through the process.
If it is called for, I like to supplement lessons with example answers, with recommended reading and with comprehension exercises. English and Philosophy are sometimes seen as difficult subjects to teach because of their intrinsic subjectivity, but I believe that high levels of critical thinking are easy to achieve with the right guidance. Keen observation, contextual understanding and a well-rounded knowledge of literary technique are some of the most important tenets of thorough literary analysis, and I look to instil this in my pupils.
From this, it is possible to create a good symbiotic exchange of ideas between student and tutor, whereby the student can formulate their own critical assumptions organically, and polish them with the aid of a tutor. I believe that vocalising ideas, and refining them by virtue of conversation, is integral to a student's understanding of their subject matter.

I study Philosophy and Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, and whilst I was writing my long essay coursework in 2ndyear, I sought the help of James Darley to proofread and edit my texts.
James took a precise and clinical vision on the structuring, wording and legibility of the essays by breaking down the document sentence by sentence on its strengths and areas for development.
James showed immense patience with his help, whilst also vindicating his English literature/language skills by improving the professional legibility of the essay to an impressive degree – likely achieving substantially more marks with his help.
James also used his experience in the education sector to provide useful exam/revision tips and tutoring that specifically concern the betterment of one’s academic performance in subjects involving English and writing.I study Philosophy and Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, and whilst I was writing my long essay coursework in 2nd year, I sought the help of James Darley to proofread and edit my texts.

James is a patient and sociable tutor and an all-round trustworthy and kind individual. James has helped me proofready my dissertation, which ended up recieving great marks. His careful, accurate, insightful and creative feedback allowed my work to achieve great linguistic flare. James approach is particularly useful, as aside from simply fixing grammatical and punctuation mistakes, he also offers creative ways of reworking sentences to optimise the language use.
