About Stephani
In film school, both writing my own and doctoring the scripts of my classmates determined my actual career choice, English teacher. In the next three years, due to high state testing scores, I made it to the senior English team as my school’s only Advanced Placement Literature and Composition instructor, and within two years of that I had taken my school’s pass rate in AP Lit from 0-1% to 38%.
In seven years teaching English, I have personally revised, edited, and given feedback to around nine thousand student essays ranging from the most informal personal narratives and literary analyses to a variety of strictly MLA formatted research projects, usually with annotated bibliographies. Through a focus on vocabulary that elicits both emotional and imaginative cues and thoughtful sentence variety, my students built both stamina and complexity as writers.
Adapting to the teaching demands of both the TEA (Texas Education Agency, who designs our standardized tests) and now College Board (nation-wide college readiness standards), I’m uniquely equipped as an editor or editorial assistant: the entire English-speaking worlds of grammar and usage, characterization, narration, formal and informal structuring, intentional figurative language, and overall strength of connectivity to any audience.

As a lifelong reader, the focus of my typical lesson plan and techniques revolve around the identification, appreciation, and analysis of figurative language, characterization, narration, setting, and structure of fiction and non-fiction.
What set me apart from classroom teachers and online tutors is my background in Filmmaking and Video Production: I've approached English Literature and Language as a fan, not as a teacher.
My lessons are for anyone seeking to strengthen as a reader, and as a critical analyst where literature is involved. My coursework remains around college standards, which adds complexity of though (analyzing how multiple elements impact a theme or message), and allows students to develop their own strengths as readers to build on.
