About Ian
I have been studying music for almost 50 years, and am fully aware that music is a life-long study. I joined the Army as a musician in 1985, served for 10 years as a trombonist and pianist in the Household Cavalry. I changed my focus towards analysis, orchestration and conducting when I attended the 3-year Bandmaster Course at Kneller Hall. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in music, and have subsequently served as Bandmaster of five high profile bands, including the Band of HM Irish Guards. During my time as a Bandmaster, one of my responsibilities was the teaching and training of musicians to performance diploma level. I’ve always enjoyed teaching, and have been lucky enough to teach at many levels. I was responsible for the development of a music department in Flowery Field Primary School in Hyde, Manchester, from 2013-2017. This was a thoroughly enjoyable time, I learned a great deal from it, and six players achieved ABRSM grade 4 before starting High School. I resumed my studies upon leaving the Army, and graduated from Durham University with MMus (Composition). Subsequently I was appointed Resident Composer and Conductor for the Royal Oman Police Bands based in Muscat, Oman, where I spent four years writing music for state occasions, instructing and training novice conductors (of whom six are now qualified Bandmasters, conducting their own bands), and teaching orchestration. Having returned from Oman, I rejoined the Army and served two more years with Royal Regiment of Scotland on public duties in Edinburgh. During this period I played in the band on duties for the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II, and the Coronation of HM King Charles III. Having returned to my roots in North Lincolnshire, I look forward to enthusing and developing other musicians. I feel that I have a great deal to give both in terms of my education, and my experiences.

I have had a full career as a military musician, and studied as player, writer and conductor at Kneller Hall, Kingston University (BA (Hons)), and Durham University (MMus Composition). I have taught instrumental lessons peripatetically and privately, I prefer to teach them F2F, whether that is at the student's location, or elsewhere, is fine. I'm happy to teach theory and composition either online or F2F, but would prefer F2F. I'm happy to receive unfinished compositions or arrangements for development. Composition would include a broad range of theory, orchestration, harmony/part-writing, and listening. Conducting involves score study, analysis, technique, and practice, so might involve multiple locations - which can be easily arranged.
