Know the subject inside out,target the syllabus,work up essay technique,pre digest the basics,supply notes,indicate the sources,repeat and rehearse as necessary,make it interesting(it is!),supply context,set ambitious hurdles,push hard,be kind but persistent,relate the subject to others taken,focus on literacy,and ask for application.
