About Jessica

I'm an animal scientist (B.S. in Dairy Science and Microbiology) and public health specialist (Master of Public Health in Global Health) who specialized in infectious diseases and vaccinology. As a One Health scientist, I have studied (and aced) these subjects at the graduate level from both the veterinary and human medicine perspectives, so I am familiar with introductory approaches (which I encountered repeatedly growing up) and higher level differentiations. Recently, I have begun to prepare the MCAT (medical admission exam) so I have been reviewing all of my undergraduate science courses. That means I'm both recently refreshed on all of the topics I'm offering, and able to empathize with students currently learning the material. As a non-traditional graduate student, I am familiar with both "old school" and newer teaching methods and draw from each, depending on what works for me, or those who I am helping. I was an undergraduate anatomy lab TA for 4 years, and spent several summers working with K-12 children, so I am comfortable with all age ranges and different educational approaches. Last but not least, while I have emphasized my scientific background, I have been a writer and editor multiple times since college, creating educational material for the general public, medical professionals, and while I worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I will not write a student's paper but I will help them research, compose, and edit it.

About the lesson

I'm laid back but enthusiastic. This means that I try to make myself approachable for questions and concerns, but I've specifically chosen courses that I know well and genuinely love, so I try to make learning fun, for any and all ages. There's no shame in confusion, it just means a different approach needs to be taken. So, I like to find out what you understand, what you find confusing, what works for you, and what doesn't. If you already know, great! If we need to figure it out together, that's fine too!

I love a great mnemonic device and drawing from what you know to try to make the material more engaging and relatable (which helps to make it easier to learn).

If you can give me a heads up on the upcoming topics, I'll try to create some additional practice material or questions for us to work through.

We will work on it until we can celebrate your success together.
