What are the benefits of learning French

French is the 5th most spoken language in the world with 280 million speakers, and it is expected to reach 570 million speakers by the year 2030. So when learning French, you will be acquiring a skill that will allow you to visit a lot of different countries in different continents and it will give you access to a lot of different content.

Learning French can improve your experience. Perhaps you are interested in visiting Paris and learning French is part of that interest. It is certainly true that interacting with the locals in Paris will be much improved by the fact that you are making the effort of speaking their languages and not the other way around. It may also give you a different perspective of the Parisian experience, one that makes you feel more immersed in the city and not so detached as a tourist.

Learning French gives you a lot of opportunities, but it is important to be focused and motivated when you learn it. Taking French lessons with a tutor may improve that experience. It will help you define your goals, keep you motivated and consistent in your work. It will also give you guidance to find the best route for you.

Improve your language skills by learning French

If you are an English speaker and you are learning French, you may be introduced to a series of different elements that are part of the French language that are not necessarily found in English.

Gender in words, for example, is one major difference between French and English. Each word has a gender, feminine or masculine (sometimes neutral) that will have to be in accordance with its adjective and its article. This is a common feature of romance languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc. All of them feature gender in their nouns and articles and adjectives.

The way you may conjugate verbs in English is somewhat different from French. The conjugations of French verbs are a bit more complex, but once assimilated you might find it easier to learn other romance languages as most all of them present the same ways of conjugating verbs. Time conjugations such as present, past and future are conjugations that as an English speaker you will recognise; however, most English is conjugated in the indicative. It will be a new experience to conjugate verbs in the subjective (desires and wishes) that will conjugate times in its own realm.

Finally, there might be different pronunciations that you might not be familiar with. The French “r” might end up being a challenge, but once learned it will open the door to other languages such as German. French vowels are similar to the English ones, as they are several and usually they are not pure ones like in Spanish. This might be a common point between the two languages; however, you will be introduced to nasal sounds that might be new to you.

All of these differences are best to be addressed with some guidance. Learning with a teacher might be the best decision in this case and the changes are sometimes very evident and other times very subtle.
