Learning any language that exposes you to another culture and way of life will give you perspective and appreciation for cultures that you may not be entirely familiar with. It will also make you appreciate people who are bilingual and who have done the work of learning your language and you may see the effort behind it.
Finally, learning a new language, such as French, can make your brain bigger. Bilingual people have shown growth in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus. Data also shows that people who speak more than one language enjoy higher incomes as a result of increased professional opportunities.
Learning French has a lot of benefits. Taking French lessons with a teacher is now easier than ever using platforms such as Superprof. Lessons can be via webcam and they can use a material that is found online. Learning with a teacher will keep you focused and motivated and it is a great opportunity to see for yourself the benefits of this new skill.
If you are an English speaker and you are learning French, you may be introduced to a series of different elements that are part of the French language that are not necessarily found in English.
Gender in words, for example, is one major difference between French and English. Each word has a gender, feminine or masculine (sometimes neutral) that will have to be in accordance with its adjective and its article. This is a common feature of romance languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc. All of them feature gender in their nouns and articles and adjectives.
The way you may conjugate verbs in English is somewhat different from French. The conjugations of French verbs are a bit more complex, but once assimilated you might find it easier to learn other romance languages as most all of them present the same ways of conjugating verbs.
Time conjugations such as present, past and future are conjugations that as an English speaker you will recognise; however, most English is conjugated in the indicative. It will be a new experience to conjugate verbs in the subjective (desires and wishes) that will conjugate times in its own realm.
Finally, there might be different pronunciations that you might not be familiar with. The French “r” might end up being a challenge, but once learned it will open the door to other languages such as German. French vowels are similar to the English ones, as they are several and usually they are not pure ones like in Spanish. This might be a common point between the two languages; however, you will be introduced to nasal sounds that might be new to you.
All of these differences are best to be addressed with some guidance. Learning with a teacher might be the best decision in this case and the changes are sometimes very evident and other times very subtle.
