Art is necessary for our quality of life. Learning and studying art is no different. Learning about art helps you see things differently, because art can help you be more empathetic.
Each piece of art has an emotion that is trying to convey to the viewer. This emotion is sometimes not very evident. This is why learning about art makes us see art with different eyes. As we spend more time admiring the piece of art, the more we get to understand it. This helps us be more empathetic.
It also helps you use your brain in a different way since the part of the brain that engages with art is your sensory brain, your right hemisphere. Art creates more connections between both hemispheres.
And lastly, art is a great coping mechanism for stress and anxiety. This is because art can be an outlet for negative emotions and anxiety. You can use art as a channel for your expression and by doing so it helps get frustration out.
Taking an art class can teach you about the many different elements of art that make the medium work.
Art has seven different elements that are at play at all times. These are rhythm, balance, emphasis or contrast, proportion, pattern, harmony, unity and variety.
Rhythm is created by movement implied through the repetition of elements, while balance is what makes the piece of art feel stable and this is achieved by the use of symmetry, asymmetry and radial symmetry.
Emphasis is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant, and this is usually achieved by the use of contrast.
Proportion refers to the relationship of certain elements to the whole and to each other, while a pattern is the repetition and placement of repetitions of an element. This again is related to rhythm in the piece.
Harmony is a way of combining similar elements in artwork to accent their similarities. And unity and variety are how we sense the composition as a whole (unity) while still keeping an ongoing interest in the composition through the use of various elements (variety).
Learning to see and appreciate these elements will enhance your art experience, not just for visual arts, but for all mediums and genres. This is the main benefit that an art class can give you, it can expand your perception of art in general and by doing so it is giving you more joy and appreciation when experiencing a painting, a movie, a piece of music or a play.

Art is very important in life because art is food for the soul. Art, unlike other disciplines such as psychology, biology, philosophy, economics, and many more, art does not deal with intellect or factual aspects of human experience; art deals with symbols and emotions.
Art can express through images, shapes and forms, colours and shades, emotions and experiences that can transport us to our own emotions and experiences. This is why art is so important in our life: art makes us more empathetic.
Art can also give us a moment for ourselves. When we are experiencing a piece of art, we are having a moment with ourselves. Whatever art is making us feel or think has a direct relation to us, personally and humanly. So art can give us time to get to know ourselves more, to understand our emotions maybe a bit better or to reflect on something from the past that can make us feel more connected to the several states of our lives.
Art is very important in our lives and we all should spend some time with it, whether you are at a museum or at a gallery, online browsing or at a park where there is a pretty sculpture. Next time you encounter a piece of art, do not dismiss it right away and ask yourself what you feel by watching it.
Finding a teacher is very easy today. Visit Superprof and on the platform you will get access to a wide catalogue of art teachers in New Zealand who can give you private art classes for reinforcement or simply teach you more about art, its principles and its history.
