About Dylan

I might come off as casual both in writing and in person sometimes, but my passion for both the Spanish language and for spreading and sharing knowledge and understanding is something that I take seriously. Seriously enough that I stopped teaching in schools because there were too many students in my classrooms that didn’t want to be there, and I would rather direct my energy into people like you, who are actively seeking help with learning this awesome language! I’ve studied and practiced it for 15 years, and love sharing what I’ve learned with others.

About the lesson

Honestly, if you’re just starting out with Spanish, you probably want to jump right into having conversations, yeah? Well then, in that case, all you’re really gonna need is me and a dictionary! Or if you’re in a class at school and are looking for a tutor to help you understand all these grammar concepts they’re throwing at you, I’m your guy! I’m a lot bigger on grammar than vocabulary because, in context and from a communication perspective, a lot of times people will know what you’re trying to refer to and help you out, just like in English when you can’t remember the word for something, and somebody pipes in and says it for you. But if you can’t even form your sentences enough to get to that point, folks aren’t even gonna understand well enough to know what you’re trying to say! Starting to learn Spanish at the same time as learning sentence structure in eighth grade English class kind of started me down the path to becoming a bit of a grammar junkie, so that’s where I can help you out the most. Now, that’s not to say knowing vocabulary isn’t important, but learning how to use an English to Spanish/Spanish to English dictionary effectively can help plenty with that, and we can talk about that, too, because context is important, and you shouldn’t just use the first entry you see in a dictionary all the time, but… especially if you want to learn or work on various tenses like the past (preterite or imperfect), present, progressive, and future, or different moods, like the imperative to give commands, or the subjunctive to talk about hypotheticals and desires, shoot, even if you’re just not sure of the difference between “ser” and “estar,” (talking about the deeper implication of the difference between those two is actually one of my favorite things and is way more helpful to me than memorizing specific scenarios in which to use them) working with me is a good idea.
