About Lisa
Outside of teaching special education for 29 years, I’m married, have five children, and happily live in Adrian, Michigan. I love my two dogs, most genres of music, road trips, small-town adventures, funny classroom moments, and finding creative ways to connect with students who may not have loved school before. I believe learning works best when students feel comfortable, supported, and maybe laugh a little along the way.

I work with older students, teens, and adults who struggle with reading, writing, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and executive functioning skills. Many of my students feel frustrated, overwhelmed, behind in school, or convinced they are “bad at reading.” Usually, they just need a different approach, more structure, and someone willing to slow things down and actually teach the skills.
My focus is structured reading intervention, not just surviving tonight’s homework battle at the kitchen table. I use the REWARDS reading program, designed specifically for older struggling readers, grades 4-12+, who need help with longer words, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Many students can read basic words but get stuck once reading becomes faster, longer, and packed with academic vocabulary. I teach students how to break apart multisyllabic words using prefixes, suffixes, vowels, and word patterns so they can stop guessing and start reading more confidently.
Our initial session will include an informal reading assessment and progress monitoring so families can better understand skill gaps, growth, and reading levels over time.
Interventions include: decoding, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, word meaning strategies
One of my favorite parts of tutoring is watching students realize that reading can actually start to make sense. School’s out for summer… but the 10–12 weeks of summer can make a huge difference for struggling readers before fall.
