About Dan

I don’t just teach subjects — I help people discover what they’re capable of.

Hi, I’m Dan — a teacher, actor and passionate believer in the power of great teaching.

I’ve been teaching English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) since 2010, and throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of working with students from a huge variety of ages, cultures, backgrounds and abilities. Alongside ESOL, I’ve taught English and Drama across primary, secondary and special educational needs settings.

I also have a degree in Drama, and my background in acting naturally influences the way I teach. I bring creativity, imagination, communication and a little performance energy into my lessons — helping students find their voice, express themselves clearly and, most importantly, feel confident in doing so.

Whether we’re preparing for an IELTS exam, exploring a Drama text or performance, developing spoken English, or working towards the Life in the UK Test, I want every lesson to feel engaging, purposeful and genuinely tailored to you.

I believe the best teaching isn't about simply giving you information and hoping it sticks. It's about understanding you — how you learn, what you find challenging, what motivates you and where you want to go — and then finding the approach that helps you get there.

And that's why your success matters so much to me. I measure my own professional success by the success of my students. Whether that's achieving an IELTS grade you're proud of, speaking English with newfound confidence, performing with greater freedom, or finally passing an important test, I want to celebrate that achievement with you.

For me, there's nothing better than seeing that moment when something suddenly clicks — when a student goes from "I can't do this" to "Oh… I get it!" That's the moment I teach for.

I don't teach simply because it's my job. I teach because I genuinely love it. And if I can help you build your confidence, find your voice and take a step towards your goals along the way, then that's what makes teaching worthwhile.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is warm, friendly, supportive and tailored to each student's individual needs, goals and learning style. I believe that students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and challenging themselves, so I aim to foster a positive and encouraging environment in every lesson.

I use a combination of explanation, discussion, questioning, practical activities, guided practice and regular feedback. Rather than simply giving students the answers, I encourage them to develop the skills and confidence to work things out independently.

My background in acting also brings valuable transferable skills to my teaching. Acting has developed my communication, listening, creativity and presentation skills, as well as my ability to understand different perspectives and adapt my approach to different audiences. It has taught me how to build confidence, use voice and expression effectively, think creatively and communicate ideas clearly. I draw on these skills to make lessons engaging, accessible and memorable, particularly when teaching English and Drama. I also understand how important it is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and developing their confidence.

As a teacher, I bring professional classroom experience, a background in acting and a genuine passion for helping students make progress. My aim is not only to help you achieve a better grade or pass an exam, but also to help you become a more confident, independent and capable learner.

For IELTS students, I also focus on exam technique, understanding assessment criteria, analysing questions, structuring answers and practising under exam-style conditions.

For ESOL students, lessons can be adapted to focus on conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing or everyday communication, depending on your goals. For Life in the UK Test preparation, I use structured topic teaching, practice questions and mock tests to help students become familiar with the format and build confidence before the real test.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although I can adapt the length depending on the student's age, needs and preferences. I offer lessons remotely online, with face-to-face tuition also available in North London by arrangement.

Whether you're preparing for an important exam, improving your English or working towards a personal goal, I'll work with you to create lessons that are focused, engaging and suited to you.
