About Marshal
I have taught courses at McGill University and New York University, as well as private lessons for many years. I hold a master's degree with honours in Music Performance from McGill University and an Artist Diploma from NYU. I have been teaching music theory to students of all different levels for 7+ years now and I love to see my students progress. Aside from teaching, I am a professional jazz double bassist and singer-songwriter. I perform regularly as both a sideman and as a leader featuring my own original music. My music has gotten a lot of attention from reputable press outlets and I have had my songs played on many radio stations (including CBC) and featured in editorial Spotify playlists garnering hundreds of thousands of streams. I have two brands, one as a jazz bassist and one as an indie singer-songwriter. I have recently graduated with an artist diploma at one of the world's leading music conservatories; New York University in Manhattan, New York under scholarship. I have recently recorded with GRAMMY award-winning jazz musicians based out of New York City and I am very active as a performer/educator in New York's electric music scene.

My theory/composition lessons are structured focusing in on specifics in order to give my student the most insight on a subject. For example, we might spend an entire lesson talking about melodic minor application (jazz) or writing to a hook (songwriting), or analyzing any theoretical concept. I am also open to whatever interests the student and I am confident that with my broad sense of world music and multiple genres that I can assist you in your learning goals. I am a recent graduate from one of the world's leading music conservatories; New York University located in Manhattan, New York. I will be giving lessons via Zoom remotely as I am currently located in NY. My hourly rate is based upon my qualifications which include a master's degree in music performance, teaching experience at both NYU and McGill University, and CBC national radio airplay for my original compositions as well as hundreds of thousands of streams for my original music. At the core, from what I have analyzed in novice students, most people lack fundamental music theory knowledge that will help them understand music clearer and more efficiently. This has been my main observation in my teaching experience, and it serves as the starting point for all my theory classes. Fully understanding such rudimentary concepts as "diatonic chords" and "key signatures" is a starting point for any person looking to expand their theory/compositional palette and as such is a necessary box to check before getting into more advanced topics.

On top of being a great dude, Marshal is an outstanding bassist and educator, who displays a vast amout of knowledge across many different musical genres. Whether you are just starting out, looking to get deep into Scott Lafaro jazz solo (or anything in between), look no further, Marshal is your guy!
Marshal is a wonderfully talented young man. He is a master at what he does, and shares it well.
Having worked with Marshal for many years I can highly recommend him as a bassist, composer, and educator.
Marshal's knowledge, experience and deep commitment to the upright bass is what sets him apart as an educator.
I'm impressed by his releases in jazz / folk / country and other genres as well as his overall versatility as a player. Be sure to check out his book on Scott Lafaro style techniques!Marshal has truly opened the bass guitar for me! Whether we are working on songs, technique, song writing or music theory he notices what I am missing and has beastly recommendations that make a difference. Its also nice to have a teacher who can satisfy my interest in blues, folk and jazz! He's got a masters in jazz bass performance from Mcgill, so yeah he knows what he's doing! I would easily recommend Marshal to any intermediate player who wants the keys to unlocking their instrument.
Marshall is a passionate, knowledgable and fun music teacher. He's able to take some of the more boring subjects and explain them in a clear and entertaining way. Highly recommend!
He is truly a wonderful musician and teacher. He mastered very sophiscate harmony and theory. He is a multiple instrumentalist. He is soft spoken and patient teacher. He has an interesting way of looking at music and works hard for the students. I highly recomend him.
Marshall is an accomplished Musician with expertise in jazz, pop, country, and other contemporary styles. Marshall is an expert of technique on the upright bass. In all of my experiences playing with Marshall, his eminent musicianship has elevated the level of the ensemble. He's also a 'super chill dude' trust me.
I've had the pleasure of knowing Marshal for 6 years now. He is very kind, patient, has a great sense of humour, and explains concepts very well. Marshal would make an excellent teacher.
Marshall Herridge is an extremely talented and promising bass player who I’ve had the privilege to play with. He is an incredible human being: one who can make you laugh but is also serious, responsible and willing to teach the broad knowledge he capitalized during his career.
In one word: wow. Marshal is probably the best bass teacher I'vee ever had! He analyzed my shortcomings and gave me really good exercises to overcome them! Thanks again Marshal!
Marshal is always a joy and an inspiration to work with, no matter the genre style or skill level he’s always been able to breakdown concepts in a palatable way with practical examples along the way
He has a passion for helping people express themselves through their music and discover a life long love for musicianshipView more recommendations
