About Caspar
As a university student studying pure mathematics at the University of Queensland I am familiar with the struggle of learning difficult topics. Unfortunately it is also common to feel ashamed about this struggle which can stifle the desire to persist with understanding. Having taught extension mathematics to high school students across year levels, I believe the most crucial facets of teaching are encouraging the student to become confident in working through difficult problems, and practicing the application of concepts in novel and intellectually stimulating situations to strengthen understanding.
I encourage students to ask questions, make mistakes, and have a go - even if they are unsure about where to begin or continue. This fosters an environment fertile for learning, and allows the student to become confident in their own abilities as a problem solver.
My teaching focuses on assisting students to develop a deep understanding of topics through novel exercises and material designed to extend students to thinking beyond the textbook. There is a dedication to maintaining engagement and connecting with the student on why content is important, with emphasis on applications to the real world.

Lessons are conducted over zoom, and incorporate learning tools such as Desmos to maintain an interactive and engaging learning experience. A typical lesson consists of four main parts:
1. A brief recap of previous material where the student can demonstrate their knowledge to cement understanding and strengthen memory or ask any questions.
2. Outlining any new content for the lesson and explaining relevant new concepts. Questions are always encouraged. Outlining the work to be done in the lesson
3. Working on a combination of exercises from any external material (e.g. from school) and material picked by the tutor with reference to any relevant curricula to best suit the current learning requirements of the student (such as targeting weak knowledge areas or strengthening understanding of difficult topics). Students are encouraged to try to work through problems as well as they can on their own in order to develop problem solving skills.
4. A debrief on content covered in the exercises and clarification on any areas the student is unclear about. Home study or further reading might be assigned depending on the student's confidence in the material, study situation, and/or other factors.
