About Matthew
I am laid-back and easy to talk to. My students say I am professional, kind, patient and care about their growth. I have a heart for helping people. It has been rewarding to see my students go from struggling developmental students to confident writers who can enter the academic conversation.

I am a different kind of English teacher. In graduate school, I studied things like “Student Writing, Academic Writing, Composition Theory, Writing Pedagogy, and Rhetoric.” I didn’t study literature, Mark Twain, Shakespeare or other topics that won’t help your writing. I went to school to be a “writing expert,” to teach students how to write college papers.
Writing is a recursive process. This means a student should write several drafts and the first one usually sucks. My university students wrote several drafts per project, with my feedback in between papers. As a writing professor, my job is to act as a reader-responder, a coach who poses questions about your paper to make you a more reflective writer. This dialogue helps students develop their papers between revisions.
Here are some areas of your paper I will address in our class:
1. Help you to clarify your writing choices, meaning and purpose of your writing. What is your message in this paper? What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to inform, persuade, entertain?
2. Help you identify your audience. Who are you writing to in this paper?
3. Identify breaks in logic in your paper. Do you contradict yourself?
4. Help you organize your paper. Is it linear? How are your transitions? Do you need to reorganize, delete or add a section?
5. Tell you where you need to add more details and examples
6. Help you reimagine your text into something original: better, richer and more developed
7. Offer praise by pointing out what is terrific in your paper. Every student needs help with confidence.
8. Address grammar issues, as needed
I understand how difficult writing can be for students. They have a difficult time transitioning from high school to college writing. They develop writer’s block. They don’t know how to choose a topic, start a paper or develop an original idea. They are afraid and lack confidence about their ideas. Ultimately, these problems manifest as procrastination. Reach out to a writing expert. I can help.
