About Thomas
I've played piano for over 7 years. As both a self-taught pianist and someone who has taken years of lessons, I learned from the internet, friends, and instructor-provided teaching methods. Having experienced both sides of music education, I know how to make learning both a fun and intuitive experience, rather than slow and stressful.
I live with ADHD, autism, and depressive episodes; music has been a cathartic way to express myself and my life's emotional journey through song. I understand that traditional teaching methods don't work for everyone, and tailor my lessons to each individual's needs.
Lessons with me are a safe space where every note is an opportunity for growth, and where there is no wrong note: what matters is what you play next and how you play it. My lessons emphasize the playful, joyful nature of music, rather than emphasizing the pressure to perform perfectly.

Teaching method:
Chord-centric approach utilizing a combination of the number system and functional harmony to describe the underlying patterns among all the notes on your piano/keyboard.
VISUAL & INTUITIVE: Extensive use of visual diagrams clears up the confusion often associated with learning from sheet music, prepares you to better play your instrument, and gives you a clear, tactile map of the keyboard.
CORE FOCUS AREAS: chords, intervals, chord voicing, comping patterns, and anchor points.
Lessons will empower you to fluidly play the piano/keyboard, and to creatively express yourself through confident improvisation skills.
Lesson structure:
Warmup & Harmonic concepts: chord shape warmups combined with pattern-based harmonic concepts. Emphasis on how each note in the chords you play is related to all other notes you play.
Application: immediately apply previously learned concepts to a real song, groove, jam track, or lead sheet.
Creative exploration: Improvisation practice with expert feedback, providing you with a safe space to learn and grow.
Primary Genres: Jazz, Funk, Gospel, R&B
TARGET LEVEL: Lessons are tailored towards beginner to intermediate players with an interest in furthering their harmonic abilities, comping (jazz), and understanding music as a series of grouped harmonies, rather than an intimidating stream of notes.
