About Mariko

Hello. I'm Mariko Okubo, a ceramic artist. I run "Green Time," a healing atelier in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. I encountered ceramics in Taipei, Taiwan in 2011, and after returning to Japan in 2016, I established my atelier in Kyoto. Using people, flowers, and small animals as motifs, I express invisible emotions, memories, love, and prayers in my ceramic works. I have exhibited my work in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China, the United States, and Turkey, and have participated in international residencies and ceramic symposiums. In recent years, I have done residencies at the Watershed Center in the United States and Taoxichuan in China, and in 2026, I created and installed three sculptures of children at the Eskişehir International Terracotta Symposium in Turkey. In addition to ceramic classes at my atelier in Japan, I also teach at department store workshops and Rokko Mountain Silence Resort. I have held more than 10 workshops in Taiwan. In 2025, I led a figurative sculpture workshop at the Taoxichuan International Art Center in Jingdezhen, China, focusing on the shaping of the upper body and themes of face and expression. When teaching, I value each individual's desire to create a particular piece. I help students not only with shaping techniques but also with demonstrations and specific advice to infuse their own unique expressions and individuality into their work. Even if you are new to sculpting figures or flowers, please feel free to contact me. Lessons are available in both Japanese and English.

About the lesson

Why not add your own unique expression and color to your pottery creations? We offer online, one-on-one instruction in sculpting using clay, including human faces and expressions, flowers, and small animals. Even if you have experience making pottery but are new to sculpting human figures or flowers, you are welcome. The instructor will demonstrate the process right in front of you, checking your progress and carefully explaining how to create shapes, balance, and finish the details. This lesson values your own creations and expressions, rather than simply imitating a set shape. [Lesson Content] ・Cute flower sculpting: Shaping and assembling petals ・Creating facial expressions: Positioning of eyes and mouths ・How shapes affect expressions ・Human figure sculpting: Creating busts using the slab method, etc., over multiple sessions ・Production consultation: Specific advice based on works in progress and sketches [Target Audience & Preparation] This lesson is for those with pottery experience or those who have worked in pottery classes. Please prepare your own clay and necessary tools for the lesson. We will confirm your experience, what you want to create, and the clay and tools you will be using beforehand. Shipping of materials and firing are not included. If you wish to have your work fired, please arrange your own firing facility. Lessons are available in Japanese or English. During the initial free consultation, we will discuss your preferences and explain the lesson content and necessary preparations.
