About Sue

I have a Computer Science degree from MIT, a long career as a senior software engineer at Silicon Valley startups, and years of hands-on experience helping my own children and friends’ children with math, science, computer science, and test preparation.

I also currently work part-time as a coach at theCoderSchool, teaching elementary and middle school kids how to program.

I'm a Mom of two boys, age 16 & 20. I understand the pressure that high school kids face when it comes to preparing for college applications, and I know what parents go through as well.

About the lesson

I tutor students in computer science and programming.

1) AP Computer Science support
I can help prepare you for the (a.) AP Computer Science A exam, or the (b) AP Computer Science Principles exam.
We will work through the topics as you do so in your AP class, and I can provide extra instruction, real-time test practice, and assistance with structuring and debugging your coding projects.

2) General coding & computer science
For students who want to learn programming outside of an AP class, I teach:

* Languages: Scratch, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C, HTML, CSS, and more.
* Computer Science fundamentals
* Problem solving and debugging
* How to build small projects and gradually become more independent
* How professional software developers at tech companies use AI. (AI is only taught with explicit parental permission.)

I teach complete beginners all the way through advanced students who are planning to study computer science in college.

For most students, I recommend that we build a skill-appropriate and age-appropriate project together, usually a video game since most kids are really motivated by creating a game.

If it's a beginner and middle school age or younger, we will start with Scratch, and then move on to Python. We will develop deep familiarity with computer science concepts through hands-on work.

For older students, we develop a custom plan that takes into account their interests and gaps. They will work on their own program, but it will be more complex with the goal of making a "real" web application or mobile application.
