About Sue

ABOUT ME
* Computer Science degree from MIT
* Long career as a senior software engineer at Silicon Valley startups
* Currently a part-time coach at theCoderSchool, teaching programming to elementary and middle school students
* K-12 tutoring experience in math, science, computer science, and SAT preparation
* Mother of two sons, ages 16 and 20. I understand the pressure high school students face with college applications, and what parents are managing alongside them.

About the lesson

I teach computer science and programming to students in grades K-12, from first-time programmers to students preparing to major in computer science.

AP COMPUTER SCIENCE A (Java) or AP COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES
* Alongside your school course: We follow your class pace. I provide extra instruction, timed practice under exam conditions, and help planning and debugging your coding projects.
* Without a school course: If you are not enrolled in AP Computer Science, I can teach the full course independently and prepare you for the exam. For most students, this requires two sessions per week and completion of the homework and projects I assign.

GENERAL CODING & COMPUTER SCIENCE
For the complete beginner to the advanced student:
* Languages: Scratch, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C, HTML, CSS, and many more.
* Skills: Computer science fundamentals, problem solving, debugging, and algorithms.
* Projects: Students build projects at their level and become more independent over time
* AI in professional software development: How developers at tech companies use AI tools. This is taught only with explicit parental permission.

HOW I TEACH
* Beginners in middle school or younger: We start with Scratch and move to Python, building a project together, usually a video game, since most kids are motivated by making their own.
* Older or more experienced students: We build a custom plan around your interests and skill gaps. You work on your own program, with the goal of producing a working web or mobile application.
