About Leonardo

Hello! I’m Leo. I’m a recent law graduate from the University of Oxford who studied History, English Literature, and Computer Science for A Levels. As a recent graduate, I understand the difficulties that students may experience when trying to learn new subjects and study to achieve high grades. Because I had to navigate this experience largely independently, I am eager to guide students and help them in this potentially overwhelming experience. More specifically, I hope to teach students the soft-skills that are widely applicable to all subjects such as essay writing and analysis skills, as well as the specific content that students may need to learn, and revision techniques to ensure preparedness for exams. During my degree at Oxford, I developed my writing, analysis, and reading comprehension. I aim to teach these skills to students pursuing their own studies, whether in preparation for their GCSEs, A-Levels or for their university applications. This means I can greatly improve students' performance in essay-based subjects such as History and English so as to ensure that their essays are well-structured with interesting analyses. Furthermore, my familiarity with intense, content-heavy subjects has allowed me to develop an understanding of how to effectively study for exams in a manner that deepens a student's understanding of their topic so as to prepare them for any exam paper. This includes an understanding of a range of revision and study techniques that can be varied depending on the way that individual students learn best, ensuring that not only their exam technique is polished, but that they are well-equipped with the necessary content needed to achieve outstanding grades. Having studied a range of A-Level subjects, from History to Computer Science, I can provide insight as to how a student may use a unique academic background in computer science or STEM to their advantage in their application. This unique perspective is furthered by the modules I studied for my degree, which explored the interaction between law and technology. Furthermore, having gone to a state school, I did not receive much support from my school and had to independently navigate the UCAS application system and understand how to write a compelling application. I therefore am aware of the challenges that students may face in applying for universities, and am keen to make the application process less elusive for such students. This includes an understanding of what kind of extracurriculars a student may wish to pursue to strengthen their application, and how to make a compelling application with the extracurriculars they already pursue.

My overall approach to tutoring is to provide students with both the wider essay-writing techniques needed to succeed in essay-based subjects, whilst additionally guiding students through the content of their subjects in order to highlight points of interest and how they may be used for exam purposes. By applying the writing, reading comprehension, and analysis skills I developed throughout my degree, I aim to provide students with the general soft skills required to excel in essay-based subjects. Having written essays on a weekly basis during my degree, with feedback being given by experienced professors, I am able to apply similar feedback to students to allow them to develop essay-writing techniques that show high academic capabilities. Additionally, the content-heavy nature of my degree, as well as my experience doing GCSEs and A-Levels myself, has allowed me to understand how to approach content-learning in preparation for exams so as to identify what content is necessary and useful for exam purposes, ensuring that a student’s understanding of the content of a subject is sufficiently broad and simultaneously efficient. Through this approach, I aim to improve students’ academic abilities on a wider level, such that they are prepared for anything that may come up in exams. This approach is flexible depending on the specific needs of a student - for instance, a student who may want to focus on the content of their subject may have a greater emphasis on content-focused tutoring sessions, whereas a student who wishes to improve on their essay writing as a priority will have more essay-writing sessions. In addition to my tutoring for school subjects, I also provide tutoring for Oxbridge admissions - this includes feedback and improvements for personal statements, as well as mock interviews and interview feedback. A typical lesson, both for admissions and for specific subjects, will last an hour - during this hour, a certain sub-topic of a subject will be focused on, or essay-writing feedback and coaching will be provided, depending on what the student wants to focus on for that session. These lessons are for GCSE and A-Level students primarily, but students who are interested in learning content or improving their essay-writing in advance will also benefit from them.
