About Dakyo

Do you understand Korean grammar but freeze when it's time to speak? Let's fix that together.

Hi there! I'm Dakyo, born and raised in Seoul. I now live in New York, as an artist.

I teach in both English and Korean, so you'll always know exactly what I mean. If you'd rather try a lesson fully in Korean, we can do that too. Just tell me what you need.

Living in New York, I use English every day. I know the feeling of having the right idea in your head and the wrong words coming out of your mouth. You will never feel embarrassed in my class.

Pronunciation is my specialty. Korean has sounds that don't exist in English, and most lessons just tell you to listen and copy. I do it differently. I'll show you exactly where your tongue sits, how far your mouth opens, and where the air stops. (That's how I learn English pronunciation) Once you can feel the difference between 어 and 오, or between ㄱ, ㄲ and ㅋ, you stop guessing. If your Korean is good but people still ask you to repeat yourself, this is usually the reason.

My lessons are relaxed. We talk about things you actually care about: art, music, your job, your weekend. Korean sticks much better when the conversation is real.

I also love teaching proverbs and 사자성어. They show you how Koreans think, and they make you sound far more natural than a textbook ever will.

Outside of class, you'll usually find me at a museum or at home with my cats, Lyall and Eddie :)

About the lesson

*** Your first lesson ***

We'll talk about where you are now, why you're learning Korean, and what you want to be able to do. No preparation needed!! Just come and say hello.

*** How my lessons run ***

- (You choose the language.) If you'd like, I'll run the whole lesson in Korean — and the moment something doesn't land, I'll explain it in English until it clicks. You can change your mind mid-lesson (just ask!!)

- (You choose the situation.) Bring your questions, or pick the scene you want to practice — a job interview, a first date, ordering at a café, texting a friend. We'll do it the way Koreans really say it, not the way textbooks say it.

- I correct you as we go, and send notes after class — new words, corrected sentences, and what to review.

*** What we cover, by level ***

[Beginner]
Hangeul, pronunciation, and the sentence patterns you'll actually use. You'll be speaking from the first lesson.

[Intermediate]
The gap between "correct" and "natural": particles, endings, tone, and when to use 반말 or 존댓말.

[Advanced]
Nuance, proverbs (속담) and four-character idioms (사자성어), news and drama, plus writing and presentation practice.

*** Materials ***

I'll bring what we need — textbook chapters, K-drama and YouTube clips, news articles, song lyrics. You're welcome to bring your own, too: a message you didn't understand, an email you need to write, a scene you want to decode.

*** What I ask of you ***

Just try. Mistakes are the fastest way in — I'd rather you say it wrong than not say it at all.
