About Pirihira
As an educator working in the alternative education sector, I see firsthand the impact of students falling behind within the system. Too often, capable learners are overlooked when teaching approaches don’t match how they learn.
My goal—both in this work and in my tutoring—is to adapt my teaching to each student’s individual learning style. By doing so, I’ve seen consistently strong progress and meaningful success for the students I support.
On a personal level, I strive to be an accessible, high-quality, and approachable tutor. I aim to create a safe, supportive learning environment where students feel understood, capable, and confident. Quite simply, I aim to be the tutor I needed when I was a child.

Te Reo Maori
Every lesson is personalized and designed to meet you where you are. We always start by finding out what students already know, so learning feels achievable and not overwhelming.
First, we focus on sounds and words.
We work on hearing, recognizing, and playing with the sounds in language. This includes learning the 44 sounds of English, breaking words into sounds, blending them together, and changing sounds to make new words. These skills are essential for reading and spelling, and we practice them in clear, structured ways.
Next, we learn phonics in a simple, logical way.
Phonics is taught step by step, using clear rules that build on each other. This helps reading and spelling feel more predictable and manageable. Students will learn how to decode (read) words by sounding them out and encode (spell) words by listening carefully to each sound.
Reading practice builds confidence.
We use short, level-appropriate texts and repeated reading to help words become more automatic. Students also learn strategies for breaking down tricky words, so you don’t get stuck. Along the way, we talk about the meaning of new words to grow vocabulary.
Writing is broken into manageable steps.
Writing can be tricky, so we focus on one skill at a time—such as handwriting, spelling, sentence writing, or organizing ideas. As skills grow, we move into writing different text types and learning how to edit and improve your work. Technology and assistive tools are used when helpful.
Finally, we build understanding and confidence.
As reading becomes easier, we work on comprehension—visualizing, predicting, and thinking deeply about texts. The goal is for students to feel confident, capable, and in control of your learning.
I tend to run my lessons for up to 1 hour per session depending on the student, in that time a lot can be covered without overwhelming the student.
