About Jairus
My path to music has been far from linear — I originally set out to study biology in college! I'm proud to have pivoted to music after graduating, drawn by a desire to explore my family's and culture's ties to my home in Hawai'i. I have trained with many teachers from middle school and have experience winning prizes in competitions and auditioning into competitive festivals, but I am most proud of the projects I have made in establishing teaching networks at Yale within the undergraduate communities. Teaching has been a way to give back to the communities that raised me, and it's taught me just as much in return — about the mechanics of playing piano, and about how the brain actually learns them.

I shape my attitude and pedagogy entirely around clear conversations on intention with both parents and student (where applicable). Whether you are a toddler starting out your journey with music, a middle schooler preparing for auditions/competitions, or even an amateur of many years looking to brush up and start re-learning particular songs/pieces, I have enjoyed teaching students at all of these levels. I have a background primarily in classical music but have played in Jazz ensembles in the past.
