About Caleb

Hi! My name is Caleb Xiao and I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree as part of the Biomedicine Undergraduate Scholar's Program at Monash University. I graduated from John Monash Science School in 2024 with an ATAR of 99.40 and developed a great passion for Biology and science as a whole during my three years there.

My mission is to help your children discover the beauty and intricacies of science and what it offers in terms of our perspectives of the universe we live in. I believe that everyone can do well in science subjects (your child is no exception!) and that, more importantly, doing so will open up a new perspective on how to analyse the world. I wish to guide your child's learning and help them experience the same passion and excitement I have for these subjects! Through our lessons, they will build the necessary knowledge, skills, and (most importantly) academic confidence to excel throughout their schooling journey!

About the lesson

As the study of life itself, biology is an increasingly pivotal field in the 21st century and is a large part of science curriculums in Victorian high schools - and rightfully so! The subject offers vast insight into the nature of being and the fascinating complexity of biological systems that operate seemingly magically throughout the natural world.

What's sad to see, however, is the way people struggle to grasp biological concepts, not because of any fault of themselves, but because no one has taught them properly. Particularly in VCE Biology, there is a misplaced emphasis on memorisation without understanding - shoving in as many key terms into one's brain without a second thought on the concepts these key terms relate to and choosing to regurgitate pre-planned responses without nuanced understanding. The unfortunate consequence is that young students begin to despise the subject and disregard this brilliant field of science. This teaching method further degrades student confidence in biology as their brain struggles to memorise all these seemingly disconnected terms, inevitably affecting both their academic performance in biology as well as their academic self-esteem as a whole.

I want to change that. Your children will learn to appreciate the mechanisms and flows of biological concepts and learn not only the key terms and knowledge of the subject but also the integral connections between each area of study, allowing them to apply what they know effectively, particularly in novel circumstances. With a raw 45 study score in VCE Biology Units 3&4, I'll ensure that your children are shown the utmost care and expertise when it comes to their education.

I don't want your kids to be bored either. We'll utilise engaging resources to encourage active learning and reinforcement of key knowledge, with most of the teaching being done through one-on-one lessons where I will cater my lessons to suit the needs and learning style of your child as I get to know them to make sure they get the best education possible! The warm and friendly environment of our lessons, where your children will feel comfortable and welcome, will encourage them to ask hard-hitting questions (if they stump me, it'll show how intelligent they are!), explore curiously, and come to love biology and all that it is! Their knowledge will be continuously established and retained through active recall of prior knowledge that I will provide which will stagger revision throughout their tuition experience - making sure their active brains soak up as much information as possible! If they have their own resources, such as notes from their school lessons, I am also happy to explain and guide them through these as well!

Any specific topics of biology you wish to focus on for your child or any general questions you have about your child's learning are also welcome and encouraged, as parents often play a huge role in their child's education and one that should not be understated or ignored! From my experience in tutoring, all of it is dependent on cooperation and I wish for everyone to be able to contribute to the lessons!

Important information about my lessons:

- While I charge by the hour, our lessons do not need to be restricted to just one hour! By request, lessons can be extended for more in-depth learning.

- I can travel to locations near the Vermont South area and can meet students at or near Monash University. Any other locations further away will require Webex online lessons.

- These lessons are suitable for students in primary school and secondary school, particularly those taking VCE Biology Units 3/4.

- Please note this is not tutoring for selective school entry exams. I will not be providing any resources or teaching catered to those exams.

Details

Below are some details regarding my tuition rates:

- All prices are negotiable to an extent. If you are experiencing financial hardships, discounts can be given and fees can be waived in special circumstances.

- All payments will be made independently of the SuperProf website via bank transfers or in cash. This is due to the commission fee SuperProf charges. By issuing payments externally, I can keep fees low for all students. Alternative forms of payment can also be negotiated.

- I will send invoices to seal the purchase of lesson hours. These invoices will include my bank details which you can use to transfer payment for these lesson hours. If a refund is to be issued, please present this invoice to streamline the refund process.

- Lesson hours can be bought in packs (e.g., 5 hours for an upfront payment of $200). However, refunds will not be issued if the student fails to attend a lesson paid for by these hours without a reasonable excuse. Refunds in full will only be issued if a legitimate reason is given for the absence.

- The extra $10/hr for in-person lessons is to account for travel time and associated costs.
