About Iris

I have a Master's of Science in Education from UPenn and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Psychology from Amherst College. In high school, I scored on the worldwide 93 percentile of the IB diploma and participated in the International Mathematics Olympiad in Mexico. I have taught in elite international schools in the US, Croatia and Albania for 6 years and I have been tutoring online for 3 years. My academic training and personal interests are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary. In addition to visual art and poetry, I am passionate about and versed in science, psychology, world religions, mindfulness meditation, music, mythology, history of math and science, innovative pedagogy, and design thinking. I believe this variety and breadth of interests makes me a better teacher. It enables me to build bridges between the student, myself, and the content in creative, relatable, and refreshing ways, which helps the student develop trust, feel engaged, and develop his or her own talents and interests.

If you struggle to feel confident in math, I can help your relationship with the subject to one of deep understanding, confidence and increased joy. Areas of expertise: Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus, IB Math, SAT prep. I see potential in every student, no matter how they present initially. This faith is supported by the findings on growth mindset -- a neuroscience supported belief that abilities are malleable. In fact, I especially enjoy working with students who have math phobia and turning around their experience with the subject. I believe learning math is like investing in the stock market. Investing wisely means going the extra mile to develop deep, conceptual understanding where one truly owns the concepts. This takes a little longer than memorizing a rule but pays off enormously and consistently. I am committed to helping students understand things deeply and conceptually so that no matter what type of problem is presented they are able to transfer their understanding and navigate unfamiliar contexts with confidence. There is an education quote that captures an important part of my educational approach: “He who does is the one who learns”. While I utilize direct teaching and lecturing, I am very intentional about providing students with numerous opportunities to practice, so I have data on their understanding and they have opportunity to receive feedback. I also design opportunities for them to actively make meaning of the content by posing frequent questions and by helping them articulate their understandings so that they can better internalize them. For example, after solving a challenging multistep problem, I may pause and invite the student to write his understanding in his own words, make a visual or mnemonic device if relevant, and articulate an insight that emerged from the challenge.
