I believe that skill improves with one's relationship to reading and writing, so in working with students, I really aim to help them build a positive relationship with literacy. Lessons will look different based on the goal of the student and whether we're focused on reading or writing.
If we're focused on reading, then I will require whatever text is being read in the classroom, along with any materials that are being used. I will use those materials to construct a lesson based around whatever they are being required to do in class, the standard/skill being developed, or what the student is struggling with.
A typical writing coaching session will depend on what stage of the writing process the student is in. If they have not started, we will begin by dissecting the prompt and brainstorming, culminating in an outline they can use to begin writing. If they have a draft, we'll work on revisions, and I will provide advice on how to make the writing more effective.
